Rich and diverse multicultural society
Australia is one of the most cosmopolitan and dynamic societies in the world, and cultural diversity is a central feature of our national identity. Over 300 different languages and dialects are spoken in Australia, including 45 indigenous languages. The most commonly spoken language after English is Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), followed by Italian, Greek, Arabic, and Vietnamese.
In 2008, Australia's population exceeded 21 million, made up of people from over 200 countries. About 45% of Australians are either born overseas or have at least one overseas-born parent. Over 650,000 Australians claim some degree of Chinese heritage.
