Shanghai, China: The Australian pavilion today played to host to a delegation of over 85 Australian university graduates from the Australia China Alumni Association (ACAA). The delegation was taken on an exclusive tour of the soon to be completed pavilion with Pavilion Director, Peter Sams.

3,748 applications to work at the Australian pavilion were received by the September close date, and throughout October the first round of Australian inteviews were held in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin and Canberra.

THE PEOPLE OF CHINA SELECT “PENG PENG” FOR AUSTRALIAN PAVILION MASCOT
The Australian pavilion today announced that, after a two-month long competition, the people of China have selected the name “Peng Peng” for its kookaburra mascot. Commissioner General for the Australian pavilion, Peter Tesch, said, “We feel that this is a very suitable name for our mascot.”

AUSTRALIAN PAVILION UNVEILS ITS PAVILION THEME: IMAGINATION
To celebrate Children’s Day the Australian pavilion has today unveiled the details of its overarching pavilion theme – ImagiNation – and has called on Chinese families to embrace and nurture their children’s imagination in addressing the urban challenges of the 21st century. “The power of our individual and collective ImagiNation holds the key to achieving a sustainable future for the world’s cities”, said Commissioner-General for the Australian pavilion, Peter Tesch.

With just under one year to go until Shanghai World Expo 2010 opens, the Australian pavilion has commenced the first component of its recruitment drive. Information sessions for potential applicants were held in Shanghai in the first week of May, in conjunction with Austrade’s Shanghai offices, and generated strong interest from the local community

SHANGHAI, CHINA: The Australian pavilion today unveiled its official mascot for Shanghai World Expo 2010 – the kookaburra – and invited all residents of China to propose an appropriate name for the unique Australian bird. The winner will receive an exciting prize package, including the opportunity to see the kookaburra first-hand in Australia. “Clever, confident, and resourceful with a cheeky sense of humour, the kookaburra reflects well the personality of the Australian people,” said Commissioner-General for the Australian pavilion, Mr Peter Tesch.

Australia Leading the Way at Shanghai World Expo 2010
Minister for Trade Simon Crean visited Shanghai today to take part in the 'topping out' ceremony for Australia's national pavilion at Shanghai World Expo 2010. "The Australian pavilion is clearly the most advanced of any of the international participants", Mr Crean said.

Construction of Australian Pavilion commences
On 7 January 2009, Australia became one of the first nations to commence pavilion foundation works. Two weeks in, 167 concrete pilings have already been driven and work is well underway.
