In a first for Shanghai, the Australian Pavilion will host the largest ever demonstration of Australian Indigenous artists and performers in China when we celebrate Oceania Month in August at the Shanghai World Expo.
During Oceania month, the Pavilion will host a unique line-up of artists from the Torres Strait and Australian mainland in a celebration of creativity, energy and pride in our Indigenous cultures.
Artists will include Ariw Poenipan Torres Strait Cultural Group, Mornington Island Aboriginal Dancers and B2M, a contemporary Aboriginal singing group. In addition, Aboriginal visual artists Wendy Nungarrayi Brown and Alma Nungarrayi Granites from Central Australia will demonstrate their distinctive art on canvas.
"We are thrilled to be able to bring this fantastic line-up to Shanghai. Thanks to our State and Territory partners and Australia's peak arts body, the Australia Council for the Arts, we are bringing together some of Australia's outstanding Indigenous performers and artists with high energy, visually exciting performances that will delight the crowds, " said Lyndall Sachs, Commissioner-General for Australia.
In addition to the special Indigenous focus during August, Australia's vibrant cultural and artistic life will be on show with performances by visiting artists including percussion group Tetrafide, pianists Aidan Boase and Camilla Wong, guitarist Jeff Lang and street theatre group Bizircus.
We will continue with our unique collaborative performances with artists from other country pavilions as part of the Commissioner-General's Starlight Series which is held regularly to showcase Australia's artistic excellence.
